NATURAL VALUES Janów Lubelski – the prize-winner of the contest “Commune friendly to Nature” organized under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Poland. The Town and Commune are situated in the picturesque place between the Janów Forests and the hills of Roztocze. Such localization makes the landscape be amazingly attractive. As the result of erosion phenomena in the part of this area were created scenic canyons and ravines. Another part is predominated with, almost entirely covered with forest, a Woodland Plane. The forests here are of the extensiveness almost unparalleled in Europe. The Janowskie Forests belong to the large forests complex called Solska Forest (Puszcza Solska). The Landscape Park “Lasy Janowskie” covers the area of over 60 thousand ha. These are the forests mainly consisting of the natural origin forest stand. It is on of the largest in Poland area of forests with the fragments of the Sandomierz Forests, with great complex of ponds, marshes, peat-bogs, where you can fin a great variety of rare species of animals and plants. Among the 103 rare species of plants, nearly half of them are preserved, e.g.: ramson, scheuchzeria, reed grass, club-moss or sundew. As far as fauna is concerned you can find here red deer, roe-deer, wild boar, elk, wolf, fox, boron and much more. Also a beaver is quite numerous here. In the sky above you can notice a white tailed eagle, buzzard, goshawk, and black stork flying. The Forests of Janów are one of the few places in Poland where you can see wood grouses. The natural character of the forests is proved by the existence of 6 reserves of nature: Szklarnia “Reserve – established in order to prevent the forest of the fir-tree of the natural origin. The attraction of the reserve is the Biłgoraj Horse mainstay; The “Forests of Janów” Reserves (“Lasy Janowskie” Reserves) – besides its natural values it has an enormous historic value. In Porytowe Wzgórze in 1944 took place the largest guerilla battle in the WWII in the territory of Poland, “Imielty Ług” Reserve – maintained almost in the natural condition marsh Imielty Ług is the example illustrating the successive phases of the reservoir becoming grown over. It is also the mainstay of a number of water flow and marsh birds. “Kacze Błota” Reserve – mid-forest marsh, characteristic of the old forest “Jastkowice” Reserve – the oldest of the reserves, established in order to preserve the fragment of the forest that has the old forest characteristic features “Łęka” Reverve – concentration of the forest stand of the natural features, among them the ash tree restoring. It is the place of rare birds nesting. In order to preserve the most precious natural specimen in the territory of the Park and in its surrounding over 100 monuments of nature were established. Of these the most common are durmast and lime tree as well as beech, pine, fir, hornbeam, and elm tree. In many cases these trees are over 100 years old; however there happen to be even older specimenn.
Center of Ecological Education The periphery of the town there is the Center of Ecological Education. The Centre work within the framework of Forest Promoting Complex Lasy Janowskie (Leśny Kompleks Promocyjny Lasy Janowskie - LKP) one of the 19 LKP functioning in Poland. Its main task is the ecological education as well as to make the social function of the forest available, with the respect for the natural values of the ecosystem. Janów Lubelski is one of the leaders in undertaking the acts in order to preserve the natural environment. There is a highly-efficient sewage-treatment plant, and in order to improve the cleanness of the air the town realizes the program of changing the coal boiler houses for the gas ones. Within the framework of the programme PHARE 2000 the new waste dump, which meet the ecological requirements of both our country and the EU, was put to use. |
