CULTURE, TOURISM, SPORT In 2004 Janów Lubelski was honored with the title “The Pearl of Lubelszczyzna”. The town was chosen by the listeners of the regional radio broadcasting station, who decided the town to be the most attractive place to visit and rest in. The Land of Janów is one of the survived ethnographic regions in the territory of Lubelszczyna. Till now you can see here the old, traditional forms, in the scope of material, spiritual and social culture. The disturbances that touched Janów in its over 350 years history did not leave many monuments. Those that survived are connected with the cult of the Holy Virgin and with the time when the town belonged to the Zamoyski Family. There are also a few monumental buildings left in the nearby villages, e.g. the farmsteads in Momoty, Ujście, Flisy and Wierzchowiska dated on the 19t and 20th century as well as the wooden manor-house dated on the 2 half of the 19th century that is in Momoty. The peculiarity of the landscape is emphasized by the crosses and chapels standing by the roads. There are over 150 of them, and they are located generally by the main roads. The oldest chapel is dated on 1848 and is located by so called Gościniec Biłgorajski. In Janów Lubelski there are two museums. In the Regional Museum, located in the building of the former prison, you can see the exhibition of textile industry and weaving in Janów as well as the gallery of historic photography of the town. Apart from the permanent exhibition there are also temporary exhibitions, e.g. of the National Geographic photography or of the art. of black Africa. The museum also organizes exhibitions of the modern art. The creator of the Plastic Arts Scene of the Catholic University in Lublin – Leszek Mądzik presents his works. There also take place the International Meetings of Artists “Interventions” (“Interwencje”), and was created the Gallery Separate Terrain (Galeria Teren Osobny). In the seat of the Forest Inspectorate in Janów Lubelski there is a permanent exhibition presenting the most precious natural values of the Forests of Janów, nearby there is the exhibition of the narrow-gauge railway rolling stock which used to lead from Lipa to Zwierzyniec. The surrounding of Janów is known of the variety and abundance of folk art. In Łążek Garncarski, 12 far from the town, till present days the inhabitants make bowls, jars, flower pots, and also a tile-making is developed here. The products are characteristic because of the geometrical ornamentation and a vide range of colours. The plastic are of rituals is also developed in this region. Kocudza, Godziszów and Biała are the place where the traditions of Easter are particularly vivid, there are Easter eggs decorated with wax, Easter palms, flowers made of blotting paper and decorative paper cut-out adorning walls of peasants' cottages. In Janów and nearby villages there are many bands and singers which still use dialect and play the original instruments. These are: the folk band “Dudków” as well as singing bands: “Janowianki” and”Kocudzanki” and the band from Momoty Dolne. A band from Blinów presents a very interesting repertoire of old rituals and traditions. It is necessary to mention also Zbigniew Butryn – the lover of music and musical instruments. He reconstructed the forgotten string instrument, so called Biłgorajska Suka. An important element of the regional identity is the cuisine. The distinguishing is the fact of so many dishes cooked using buckwheat groats, and among them Gryczok Janowski, black pudding, young pig stuffed with black pudding as well as home made bread and cured meat products and cake with buckwheat groats. Except for the traditional dishes there are also some modern ones created during the Groats Festival (Festiwal Kaszy) by the famous polish masters of art of cooking and the local authorities e.g. Kuroszanka Janowska by Maciej Kuroń or Zapiekasz Burmistrza. Janów Lubelski is a tourism town. The natural values and well developed tourism base make that one of the main directions of development of the town is tourism. The largest attraction is Zalew Janowski, the artificial lake of the area over 30ha, situated in the vicinity of the forest. Zalew has its own beach and the water in it comes from the well – head in Stoki. Near the lake there are rest houses, camping and swimming and sailing equipment hiring establishment. In the territory of the town take place many events attracting tourists from the whole region. Two of them are Ogólnopolskie Zawody Konne w Skokach przez Przeszkody (Nationwide Horse Jumping Contest) and Festiwal Kaszy „Gryczoki” (The Groans Festival) attract even 10 thousand people. Among others it is worth to enumerate: Jarmark Janowski (Folk Festival), Festiwal Artystów Filmu i Telewizji FART (Festival of the artists of film and television), or Mistrzostwa Województwa Lubelskiego w Zbieraniu Grzybów (The Championship of the Province of Lublin in Picking Mushrooms). These events join the elements of the regional culture, promote the town outside and are the factor integrating the local entrepreneurs. In Janów Lubelski there are numerous possibilities to practice tourism. The landscape and the back-up sports and rest facilities create perfect conditions for all kinds of training camps. The Zalew is dominated by the water sports – sailing, swimming contests and beach ball. Nearby there is a stud offering the lessons of horse riding, horse trips and hippo therapy. The presence of the forests creates the possibility of practising the bicycle tourism. There are a few bicycle routes through the forest leading by the villages and near the monuments and reserves. Janów has a wide range of ways of practising sports in the sports halls. In the town there is an Olympic size gymnasium for playing volleyball and basketball. There is also a section of east arts of fight – Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. Football is very popular in Janów. The town team “Janowianka” has its own football stadium.
